胰島素是由胰島β細(xì)胞受內(nèi)源性或外源性物質(zhì)如葡萄糖、乳糖、核糖、精氨酸、胰高血糖素等的刺激而分泌的一種蛋白質(zhì)激素。是機體內(nèi)唯一降低血糖的激素，促進(jìn)糖原、脂肪、蛋白質(zhì)合成，同時它在培養(yǎng)細(xì)胞、促進(jìn)增殖時也起到非常重要的作用，包括干細(xì)胞。不同種族動物（人、牛、羊、豬等）的胰島素功能大體相同，成分稍有差異。胰島素由A、B兩個肽鏈組成。
人胰島素Insulin是控制血糖水平最重要因子。Insulin在大腸桿菌表達(dá)系統(tǒng)中表達(dá)，是包含60個氨基酸殘基，分子量為5.8kDa非糖基化雙鏈多肽。另外，Insulin也可以用于組織培養(yǎng)。
